Notice of intention to drop support for Windows 2000 in Echoview version 5.4

Posted on Tuesday, 22 May 2012 | Permalink

With work now started on Echoview version 5.3, we’re signalling our intention to drop support for Microsoft Windows 2000 (remember that..?) in version 5.4.

Why are we doing this?

  • Microsoft no longer sells or supports Windows 2000 and we believe that very few (if any) Echoview users are running Windows 2000.
  • Stripping out unnecessary maintenance tasks results in a better Echoview experience, because the time we save on testing Echoview on Windows 2000 will be spent on efforts that are more valuable to your work.

Echoview 5.4 is presently scheduled for release in February 2013. If this change is likely to present a significant inconvenience, please let us know as soon as possible.

ASL's new Acoustic Zooplankton Fish Profiler (AZFP)

Posted on Thursday, 17 May 2012 | Permalink

"The preliminary launch of the Acoustic Zooplankton Fish Profiler™ at Oceanology International  ’12 was a great success!  The ASL AZFP™ offers a new, economical way of obtaining reliable measures of marine environmental conditions in the water column.  The AZFP™ can monitor the presence and abundance of zooplankton and fish within the water column by measuring acoustic backscatter returns at multiple ultrasonic frequencies.  Other sonar targets realized from the sonar backscatter data include bubbles and suspended sediments."

A successful round of Echoview training courses in the US

Posted on Friday, 23 March 2012 | Permalink

We have just completed a successful round of Echoview training courses around the US.

Hot on the heels of the Ocean Sciences 2012 meeting in Salt Lake City, Echoview team member Toby Jarvis delivered a course in each corner of the US:

  • Santa Barbara, California
  • Corvallis, Oregon
  • Ann Arbor, Michigan
  • St. Petersburg, Florida
  • Miami, Florida

Are you interested in a training course or workshop? Let us know by registering your interest and telling us what you need.

Also be sure to keep an eye on our list of upcoming courses; this may be updated at any time, so why not add this page to your bookmarks list and check back regularly?

What are the benefits of training?

Based on direct feedback, we have consistently found that our courses have something for everyone, whether seasoned veteran or complete newbie. There really is no better way (that we have found yet) to delve into the details and tackle the direct questions that you're facing in your hydroacoustics work.

Southeast Acoustics Consortium (SEAC) in Miami a resounding success

Posted on Friday, 23 March 2012 | Permalink

The inaugural Southeast Acoustics Consortium (SEAC) took place at Florida International University in Miami last week (13-15 Mar 2012). By any metric it was a resounding success.

So what went down?

The meeting was attended by over 50 acousticians with a range of experience and backgrounds. Information transfer and collaboration was the name of the game.

The attendees enjoyed two days of presentations followed by a manufacturer demonstration day at the nearby dock.

Who was there?

The meeting attracted scientists from all around the US and Caribbean. Representatives from Simrad (Kongsberg), BioSonics, HTI and Furuno were on hand to discuss their sonar products and services.

And of course, Echoview was there to discuss what can be done with all that lovely data!

What next for SEAC?

Everyone felt that the meeting was an incredibly useful way to network, share ideas and plan future projects. So the plan is to meet again, with the venue and date still to be decided.

Keep an eye out for future communications from SEAC, whether via the current SEAC website, the Echoview website or the Hydroacoustics User Forum. The plan is to set up a centralised online place that links to a range of useful resources.

Watch this space and see you next time!

Echoview 5.2 beta version released

Posted on Tuesday, 20 March 2012 | Permalink

We're happy to present the beta release of Echoview version 5.2! This version provides a broad range of enhancements and new features designed to improve your data processing and analysis in a wide variety of ways.

New features in Echoview 5.2 include:

Video playback and synchronization

Echoview now supports playing media files. Movies can be added to a fileset and will open and play much like an echogram. In order to set the exact start time for a movie, create and add a .epj file. Media files can be synchronized to an echogram, cruise track or other synchronizable window, in order to display the closest frame to the current ping or measurement

Maps and regions on cruise tracks

Automatically view maps on the Cruisetrack window via Web Map Service (WMS). A number of public WMS links have been provided as default; you can link to other geographical databases, including your own, via the EV File Properties > Mapping page.”

Vertical regions of all types (analysis, bad data, marker) can now be displayed and integrated directly in the cruise track window, and can be selected and edited in the Region Browser while the cruise track is active. This complements the existing ability to define vertical regions from the cruise track.

New operators and operator improvements

Several new operators have been added in Echoview 5.2:

The Cell Statistic operator allows you to calculate various statistics for cells in single target and Sv variables. Cells which contain no_data can have their value interpolated from surrounding cells. This operator (in combination with others) will help you to calculat Nv and M (the "Sawada index") within Echoview. Please contact Echoview Support for an example dataflow.

The XxY Statistic operator allows you to calculate the minimum, mean, maximum, median or a percentile in a sliding window of any size (up to 999 samples by 999 pings).

Merge GPS allows you to merge multiple GPS position variables, such as position data from different filesets.

And several operators have been improved:

  • Ping Subset now supports specifying the range in terms of time or distance.
  • Merge Pings now supports multibeam variable

You can now skip forwards and backwards in an echogram to points of interest in the integram. For example, loook for sudden spikes in the Max Sv value that indicate a probable intrusions of the bottom echo above the bottom-exclusion line. Use the shortcuts (by default Shift+LeftArrow and Shift+RightArrow) to navigate through points of interest in the echogram.

Other new features in this release include:

  • Domain characteristics: view additional information about the number and nature (good, bad, no data etc.) of samples in your analysis domains (cells or regions), whether via on-screen or export analysis. In addition to more comprehensively describing your data, this can assist you in specifying the assumptions you wish to make about bad-data regions within a domain
  • Line visibility settings for echograms: Bulk choose which variables you wish your lines to be visible on
  • Altitude values from Simrad GL telegrams listed in the GPS table
  • Easier creation, deletion and renaming of Filesets
  • File > Open Next (and associated keyboard shortcuts) to automatically work through a folder full of EV files
  • COM access to Resample operator settings, and to EV File Properties > Echogram mode

See the New in Echoview 5.2 for all users page in the Help file that is installed with Echoview 5.2 beta version for more details on all new features in this release.
